1920's Japanese popular yakuza play "Kutsukake Tokijiro" is coming to New York in 2011!

Kutsukake Tokijiro written by Shin Hasegawa (1884-1963) in 1928 is the one of well-known plays of Taishu Engeki theatre.(the mass popular theatre)
The project, based upon a 19th century Japanese yakuza/lone gambler story will draw on influences as diverse as the Spaghetti Western, 21st century Japanese pop culture animation and Japanese folk songs as well as the dance movements of Noh, Kabuki and contemporary dance to create J-pop Theatre.
In June, 2009 the Staged Reading of Kutsukake Tokijiro was held at the Center Stage in NY.
In July, 2010 the Benefit Night for Kutsukake Tokijiro(work-in-progress) was held at CRS in NY.
In 2011, Kutsukake Tokijiro will come to Off-Off-Broadway!

Kutsukake Tokijiro's story expresses Taishu Engeki's three major themes "obligation and love", "justice" and "loyalty and filial piety", ideas deeply rooted in the Japanese populace at the time.
